I understand and empathize with everyone’s frustration regarding the beleaguered progress of gay civil liberties in this country, specifically gay marriage. However, Kim Kardashian cheapening the institution of marriage is not a valid argument for gay marriage, simply because those who are against gay marriage are not genuinely trying to preserve the institution of marriage. They just don’t like gay people. So stop buying their argument and making the issue about marriage and/or religion. It’s about equality under the law. It’s about all men are created equal. The debate on homosexuality being a choice is irrelevant, and here’s why:
Let’s pretend for a moment that homosexuality is a choice. So is drinking juice. If someone wanted to pass a law saying people who drink juice can’t buy cars because the Holy Book of Shamalamadingdong says so and they want to protect the institution of buying cars, juice drinkers everywhere would be up in arms, and who would blame them? So if you choose to be gay, and people don’t want you to marry because the bible says so, how is that any different? The issue is compounded by the fact that married individuals are afforded certain opportunities and privileges not enjoyed by unmarried individuals. And if you’re gonna use “the bible is against gay stuff” argument - do you live your life by every single rule in the bible and actively enforce them upon everyone else? I highly doubt it. You can’t pick and choose which religious dogma you’re going to use to oppress other people. Either go all-in so you’re revealed for the fanatical lunatic that you are, or STFU about a god that doesn’t exist and his rules, admit you don’t like gay people, and be revealed for the homophobic bigot that you are.
